Performance Gain Estimates
One of the primary questions and one of the areas of the most exaggeration is performance gains. Rookies who are just getting into car tuning and have no knowledge about car tuning or have been playing Need for Speed: Underground© or Street Racing Syndicate© and believe the exaggerated gains depicted will ask "How much horsepower will this intake get me?' Other popular questions include: "How much faster will an exhaust make my car?" and "Will I be able to beat a _____ if I add an intake & exhaust?"
Then you have the other people who say things like "Yeah, I added a Weapon R© intake and a APC© muffler (Note: just a muffler) and I got 20hp from it." Most of it is blatant lying but sadly, some actually believe it to be true because a parts store clerk mislead them. The problem is knowledge. If a someone gets there hands on a CRX or a ZX3, how would they know what to do to make it faster? Common sense would say to visit a performance shop and ask the staff. This can be good and bad depending on the shop.
To actually gain around 20hp you will have to have at least a full cat-back exhaust system and a cold air intake. Both of which can yield between 7-10hp each. Another concept to consider is erring on the conservative side of a given products performance range. We will also have a table listing the various aftermarket parts, their descriptions, definitions, and ranges.
